The ancient science of numerology of names, which confers numbers on the letters of alphabets and which then gives special meaning to the values of such numbers, has been practised by many societies throughout history, from Egypt to Greece and from ancient Babylonia to China, and has, over the course of thousands of years, even become interwoven in the practice of religion (such as the Hebrew Kabbalah).
Even today, numerology in all its various forms and the tools for interpreting this science are still based on ancient traditions. There are, in fact, many ways to interpret the science of numerology and you therefore need to find a numerologist who practises the belief system that is closest to your needs.
For those not familiar with the different belief systems, they are loosely divided into Chaldean, traditional Chinese, westernized Chinese, and Pythagorean. Each of these systems has a different way of attributing numbers to letters and thus each is interpreted in its own unique way.
So if you are looking to convert the letters which make up your name into its numerical equivalent, you must first choose one of the belief systems.
If, for example, you select the traditional Chinese system, you will note that the three by three grids used for the conversion of letters is set out as four, nine and two on the uppermost line, with three, five and seven being the middle line and eight, one and six forming the bottom line.
The westernised form of this traditional Chinese grid has evolved so that the three top numbers, read from left to right, are three, six and nine, with the central line being two, five and eight, and the bottom line reading one, four and seven.
The other commonly used numerical systems used in this particular science are the Chaldean theory and those of the Greek mathematician, Pythagoras. Which system you choose is of little consequence – the important thing is that you choose one system and stick with it, as the different methods of conversion are not compatible one with another.
The way to convert the letters of your name into numbers is done by a mathematical formula and the final result is known as your Destiny Number, which is the origin of many people’s belief in their so-called lucky number, although most of them would never have connected its roots to numerology.
The list of letters and their corresponding numbers are that A, J and S all have a value of one; B, K and T are worth 2; C, L and U are all worth 3; D, M and V are worth 4; E, N and W are 5; F, O and X are worth 6; G, P and Y are worth 7; H, Q and Z are worth 8 and, finally, I and R are worth 9.
